If you are thinking of visiting the Postojna Caves, my first tip is simple: bring the ticket purchased in advance. We took it out through Wondar and it was very convenient to get there directly with everything figured out, especially since it is one of the most visited attractions in Slovenia and usually has defined entry times.
We went as a family, with my wife and son, and it was one of the experiences we enjoyed the most about the trip. The adventure begins even before entering the caves, as the tour begins aboard a small train that goes several kilometers under the mountain. That journey alone generates a feeling of entering another world.
Once inside, the walk begins through huge galleries where formations of all kinds appear: stalactites, stalagmites, giant columns and immense rooms created by nature over millions of years. It is one of those places that impresses both adults and children.
An important detail is to wear a coat and comfortable shoes. Inside the cave the temperature is around 10 °C throughout the year and the floor can be humid in some areas.
At the end of the tour you can see the famous olms, popularly known as "human fish" because of the color of their skin. They are curious blind amphibians that live exclusively in caves in this region and have become one of the great symbols of Postojna.
We also rent the audio guide for €3 per person. The information it offers is interesting, but I personally don't think it's too worthwhile. It does not include headphones, so you have to constantly bring the device to your ear while walking with the group. In our case it became a little uncomfortable. Perhaps the comparison worked against us, because on a previous trip we had visited the Gouffre de Padirac, in France, where the audio guide was integrated into a very entertaining story that made the whole tour much more immersive.
We bought the combined ticket with Predjama Castle, which is a few minutes away by car and perfectly complements the visit.
Predjama is one of those places that seem impossible. The castle is literally built inside the mouth of a huge cave, embedded in a rock wall more than 100 meters high. Just seeing it from the outside is already a spectacular image and, honestly, I think that view alone justifies the visit.
Inside you can tour the different rooms, the kitchen, the chapel, the dungeons and learn about the story of Erasmus of Predjama, the knight who resisted a siege for months thanks to a system of secret tunnels that connected the castle with the top of the mountain, allowing him to receive food without his enemies knowing.
If I had to recommend an excursion to do in Slovenia, this combination of the Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle would undoubtedly be among the first options. It is a different experience, entertaining for the whole family and one of those visits that are recorded long after the trip is over.
