Ireland is best enjoyed on the road: narrow lanes skirting cliffs, intensely green fields, ruined castles and abbeys, and towns where the night ends with live music in the pub. The west coast is the wildest and most spectacular; the east has the cities and more of the history. Rain can turn up any day of the year, but it is part of the landscape. It is a small country full of talkative people, ideal for a one- or two-week road trip with no long distances.
